18 Month Old Sleep Suggestions

The three bed biggies for your toddler at the 10-month stage are:

  1. Their nap needs can change.

  2. They might be ready to cap their nap.

  3. Some sleep separation can start.

My top sleep suggestions for 18-month olds are:

  • Start their day within the same 30-40 min wake window. It’s normal and ok for their wake time to differ daily but ideally that window isn’t wild!

  • Aim for one nap around the middle of the day for 2/2.15 hours max.

  • However your toddler’s nap needs are totally unique and they might need:
~ 2 naps a day which is age appropriate
~ less than 2 hours nap

  • If they wake early or go to bed super late they might be getting too much nap for THEM and their nap might need a cap.

  • Bedtime might need adjusting. If they’re having a chunky two hour nap it might need pushing slightly later, but if they’re starting to cap their nap it might need bringing slightly earlier.

  • Give yourselves lots of time together in the run up to the bedtime routine.

  • Try not to hurry or rush bedtime, toddlers feel this and can fight it!

  • Have a 10/15 minute heads up that sleep is coming. Toddlers are BUSY and need time to wrap up their work. Like us they don’t like to be interrupted!

  • Have plenty of daily fresh air and activity

  • And a reminder it’s normal but knackering to have some sleep separation anxiety, but this too shall pass
